Discovering the Difference in Scrub Style
Gone are the days of boxy unisex scrubs—with a wide selection of fashionable new silhouettes and updated classics, how do you begin to narrow down the field? Here are some questions to ask yourself as you shop around.
- Expensive or cheap? Invest up front in fewer, more quality pieces, and avoid running late in the morning because of a torn seam or pilled fabric. Manufacturers often have items on clearance, so going with quality doesn’t have to mean paying full price.
- What’s my body type? Consider your body type in selecting the right style. Here is a helpful online style tool based around five body types: V-shape, pear, apple, slender, and hourglass. If you carry extra weight around the middle, for example, a top with side panels has a slimming effect.
- Which colors look best on me? Go for colors that compliment your skin tone. The last thing you want is to look washed out in something that is not the right hue for you.
- What’s my size? Make sure you’re buying the right size. If you’re shopping online, check the company’s sizing chart and retake your measurements. A particular clothing line might run big or small, and you definitely want it to be the right fit to feel good wearing it.
- Basic vs trendy? Do you feel more comfortable in simple basics, or do you like to try new styles? If you’re shy about experimenting, try wearing a new style on your day off and see how you feel. You might be surprised.
- Do I need pockets? Consider how many pockets you need for the stuff you carry around at work. If you don’t need any, then freely ignore styles with pockets. Many women’s styles don’t even have pockets, to avoid the extra bulk. But if you’d like the extra storage space, then you’ll definitely need them.
- Things to always avoid: low-cut necklines, too-short tops or pants (you want your top to fall right below the hips, and the pants to come all the way to the top of your shoe), or low-rider pants.
Each workplace will have its own dress code which restricts the colors, designs, and style you’re allowed to wear, so check with your individual employer before you make your purchase.
